Caramel Apple Pie

This All-American sweet treat is a great start to your fall baking list. Follow these easy steps and get ready to experience a mouthful of flavor.

You’ll need: Pie shell, 1 1/3 cups of all-purpose flour, 1/3 cup of cold butter (cut into pieces), 3/4 cup of dulce de leche or caramel ice cream topping, 1/2 cup of chopped walnuts or pecans (toasted), 2 1/4 pounds or 6 cups of apples (peeled, cored, and cut into small slices), sugar, cinnamon

Step 1: Preheat the oven to 400 degrees.

Step 2: Roll out the pie shell pastry and line a 9-inch pie plate with it. Then, trim the excess, leaving about 1 inch of overhang around the plate. Tuck the crust under and flute the edges.

Step 3: Double-line the pastry with foil and bake at 400 degrees for 15 minutes. Then, remove the foil and remove it from the oven and reduce the oven temperature to 375 degrees. (The crust will be partially baked, but will finish baking later).

Step 4: Take a medium bowl and mix together the flour and 2/3 cups of sugar. Then, use a pastry blender to mix in the cold butter until the mixture clumps into crumbs. Set aside.

Step 5: Take a large bowl and mix together 1 cup of sugar with 1 teaspoon of ground cinnamon. Gently toss the apple slices in this mixture until they are coated. Then, pour the coated apple mixture onto the pastry-lined pie plate. Afterward, gently press down on the apples until they lay relatively flat.

Step 6: Sprinkle the crumb topping over the apples. Then, loosely cover the pie with foil to prevent browning.

Step 7: Place the pie on the middle shelf of your oven (preheated to 375 degrees). Then, place a foil-line baking sheet onto the lower rack beneath the pie. Bake for 30 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 40 to 50 minutes.

Step 8: Allow the pie to cool on a wire rack for about 2 hours before serving. One it has cooled, drizzle warm dulce de leche on top and sprinkle it with nuts.

Step 9: Serve with vanilla ice cream and enjoy!
